A Culinary Destination Awaits

Syros is a haven for those seeking to immerse themselves in the rich culinary traditions of the Cyclades. With its blend of historical charm, cultural richness, and modern innovation, the island offers a unique gastronomic experience that is both deeply rooted in tradition and refreshingly contemporary. Whether you are sampling thyme honey, savoring a glass of local wine, or indulging in a dish crafted by one of the island’s talented chefs, Syros promises a culinary adventure that will linger long after the last bite.

A Taste of Tradition: Thyme Honey by Melisyros

At the heart of Syros' culinary delights is its aromatic thyme honey, lovingly crafted by local producer Gerasimos Skordilis of Melisyros. This golden nectar, infused with the essence of wild thyme that flourishes on the island's sun-kissed slopes, captures the very spirit of Syros. Rich in flavor and medicinal properties, Melisyros thyme honey is a staple in Syros households and a must-try for visitors. Whether drizzled over fresh yogurt or paired with local cheeses, this honey is a testament to the island's commitment to preserving its natural and culinary heritage.

The Wines of Syros

No culinary exploration of Syros would be complete without sampling the island’s exquisite wines. Parakopois Winery offers a selection of wines that are as unique as the terroir they spring from. The winery’s commitment to sustainable viticulture and traditional methods results in wines deeply connected to Syros's land and climate.

The story of Syros' vineyards began a century ago with George Freris, whose family cultivated the land through four generations. This resulted in the creation of Freris Wines AEONAS, Syros' first certified organic wines. Markos Freris, inheriting his great-grandfather's passion and expertise, continues the family tradition with a focus on organic farming and modern winemaking techniques. AEONAS wines celebrate 100 years of dedication, embodying the essence of the Cycladic grape varieties cultivated with care and innovation.

Founded in 2011 by oenologist Nikos Chatzakis, Chatzakis Winery is dedicated to producing wines that authentically reflect their place of origin on Syros. Emphasizing the unique characteristics of the island’s diverse soils, altitudes, and vine ages, the winery creates elegant, terroir-driven wines with a deep respect for nature and tradition. With a focus on local varieties and a commitment to both experimentation and quality, Chatzakis Winery continues to craft wines that embody the essence of Syros, including their inaugural release, “Fabrica.”

Crafting Spirits with Soul: Makryonitis Syros Distillery

The Makryonitis Syros Distillery stands as a beacon of craftsmanship on the island, producing an array of spirits that capture the essence of Syros. With a rich history in distillation, the Makryonitis family has perfected the art of creating premium spirits that are deeply rooted in the island’s traditions. Their signature mastiha liqueur and tsipouro are crafted using locally sourced ingredients and age-old techniques, resulting in spirits that are both bold and nuanced. A visit to the distillery offers a glimpse into the meticulous process that goes into each bottle, and a taste of Syros' finest is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Local Delicacies and Culinary Icons

Syros is not just about fine wines and spirits; its culinary scene is enriched by a wealth of local delicacies and the passionate artisans who create them. At the charming Sykoutris Loukoumia Shop, visitors can meet Dina, a master of the island’s famous loukoumia. Dina’s story is as sweet as her confections—having started making loukoumia at the age of 15, she returned to school at 60 to fulfill her dream of earning a degree. Her shop is a testament to the perseverance and dedication that defines the island’s spirit.

Cheese lovers will find their haven at Zozefinos Farm, where Stefanos Vacondios raises dairy cattle in a pastoral paradise. Located at the foot of a mountain, Stefanos has built a gazebo for his sheep at the summit, ensuring they have the best view in Syros—a reflection of his deep respect and care for his animals. The cheeses produced here are nothing short of exceptional, embodying the purity and simplicity of the island’s traditional farming methods.
