As the summer temperatures begin to cool off, things in Austin are heating up. With rollicking music festivals, high-energy sporting events, and plenty of ways to enjoy the fall season, don't miss out on experiencing autumn in Austin.
Austin is the Live Music Capital of the World® meaning that music festivals are a fixture in the city year-round; however, the fall season is home to one of the city’s most anticipated--the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Taking place over the first two weekends in October on October 4-6 & 11-13, this festival is packed with over 140 artists representing multiple genres across nine stages in Austin’s beloved Zilker Park. For something a bit more spooky, celebrate Halloween early at Freaky Deaky Fest on October 26-27. At the LEVITATION music festival on October 31 through November 3, rock out to a mix of rock, indie, metal and electronica with the addition of trippy, psychedelic light shows in Downtown Austin’s Red River District and select East Austin venues.
Sports enthusiasts will love fall time in Austin, no matter your favorite sport. Formula 1 returns to Circuit of The Americas on October 18-20. Witness some of the best drivers in the world navigate the track at heart-racing speeds and hear world-class entertainment with performances by Sting and Eminem. Taking on their first season in the Southeastern Conference(SEC), cheer on the University of Texas football team during their home games at D.K.R. Texas Memorial Stadium from September through November. Get the complete gameday experience by getting decked out in burnt orange and spending the day tailgating before the game. Watch the 2024 Olympic Gold Medalist US Women’s National Soccer Team at Q2 Stadium in North Austin. The team will compete against Iceland on October 24 in an International Friendly match.
In addition to the notable sports, events and festivals of the season, visitors also find an abundance of Halloween festivities and Oktoberfest celebrations. Get dressed up and take the whole family to the Halloween Children’s Concert presented by the Austin Symphony Orchestra, or explore the Austin Zoo after the sun goes down at the annual Boo at the Zoo. With Central Texas’ strong German heritage, the Oktoberfest spirit is alive and well in Austin with celebrations happening around the city throughout September and October.
Slightly cooler temperatures in the fall mean it’s the perfect time of year to enjoy Austin’s outdoor spaces. Delight in the fall foliage on a hike or bike ride through the Barton Creek Greenbelt and McKinney Falls State Park. For something a bit more tame, the Butler Hike and Bike Trail makes for the perfect leisurely stroll around Lady Bird Lake and gorgeous views of downtown. If you prefer to relax outside, fall is the ideal time to kick back and hang with friends on some of the city’s best patios. Grab a fall-flavored coffee on the multi-level deck overlooking Lake Austin at Mozart’s, sip on margaritas and try modern Mexican bites outside under the large oak trees at Fresa’s or sample beers and brats on the patio at Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden.
