National Geographic Unveils the Inaugural National Geographic 33 List Including 2 LGBTQ Individuals

Writer: Joey AmatoJoey Amato

National Geographic has introduced the National Geographic 33, a groundbreaking list that celebrates 33 extraordinary individuals whose innovative ideas and tireless efforts are creating a better world. From tackling climate change and promoting mental health awareness to redefining sustainable fashion and protecting endangered species, these honorees are actively driving meaningful change.

A Tribute to Visionaries Across the Globe

The National Geographic 33 recognizes a diverse group of trailblazers, including Hollywood icons, fearless scientists, environmental advocates, and creative entrepreneurs. Among the honorees are actor and activist Jason Momoa, singer and mental health advocate Selena Gomez, and outdoor adventurer Pattie Gonia. Also featured are professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones, Freetown, Sierra Leone Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, and the city’s chief heat officer Eugenia Kargbo, each representing a unique cause and commitment to shaping a better future.

“For more than 137 years, National Geographic has believed in the power of bold thinking and collective action to change the world,” said Courteney Monroe, president of National Geographic Content. “The inaugural National Geographic 33 represents an exciting milestone, embodying the very essence of our brand—sharing the stories of individuals whose work makes a meaningful impact and inspires others.”

Changemakers in Action

The honorees span five continents and multiple generations, reflecting a wide array of disciplines and expertise. The list includes:

  • Adam McKay, the filmmaker using satire to highlight climate issues.

  • Björk, the musician combining art and environmental activism.

  • Carla Pérez, the mountaineer helping climbers with disabilities achieve new heights.

  • Don Cheadle, the actor fighting climate injustice in vulnerable communities.

  • Michelle Yeoh, the Oscar-winning actress advocating for women in disaster zones.

  • Pattie Gonia - The activist making the outdoors a more welcoming space for the queer community.

  • Arlo Parks - The singer-songwriter using music to campaign for mental health.

Multimedia Celebration of Impact

To bring the National Geographic 33 to life, the brand has launched a dynamic multimedia experience. This includes an interactive digital package featuring interviews, portraits, and behind-the-scenes videos available at NatGeo.com/NG33. Additionally, the April 2025 issue of National Geographic magazine will spotlight the honorees, alongside two video series, “33 Seconds with…” and “Nat Geo 33 on…,” shared across the brand’s social platforms. These series will explore the motivations and personal insights of the honorees, giving viewers an intimate glimpse into their passions and experiences.

A Call to Inspire

By highlighting the National Geographic 33, the organization hopes to elevate the work of these changemakers and encourage others to take action. “They all share a deep commitment to shaping a better future,” said Nathan Lump, SVP and editor-in-chief of National Geographic. “By shining a light on their contributions, we aim to showcase their positive impact to a global audience.”

The National Geographic 33 list is available online now at NatGeo.com/NG33 and will be featured in the April 2025 issue of National Geographic magazine.
