Just 30 miles from San Francisco, one of the gayest destinations in the world, Sonoma County features laid-back wine tasting in the most sustainable wine region in the world, stunning beaches, river adventures, fine dining, charming towns, and exciting nightlife. Stop by Equality Vines, the world’s first cause wine portfolio dedicated to equality for all people. Equality Vines presents a collection of limited-release, premium wines to benefit organizations working toward equality for all.
Gay-friendly accommodations abound, Sonoma County is known as an open place where gay travelers can explore the wonders of Wine Country and feel welcomed. The county also sees big gay events throughout the year with two Women Weekend’s in May and August, and midsummer’s Gay Wine Weekend, Lazy Bear Week and Russian River Pride Parade and Festival. See Sonoma Pride for year-round events. (Below my signature, I also included the email I sent last May, including many of our annual events.)
Sonoma County Pride reports that Sonoma County is the second “gayest” metropolitan area in the nation, with 7.63 same-sex couples per 1,000 households, behind San Francisco, which has 12.4. Sonoma County Tourism just launched a new initiative, “Wine Country for All of Us.” Grounded in Sonoma County’s long-standing dedication to inclusivity, the initiative celebrates the region’s diverse history and invites everyone to experience Wine Country through their own lens.
Cleve Jones, renowned human rights activist, author, co-founder of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, and proud resident of Guerneville says, “While our presence here once faced resistance, the county has become a beacon of inclusion, a place where people from all walks of life can find belonging. The redwoods, coastline, vineyards, and towns aren’t just scenic; they are woven into a culture of acceptance and connection that continues to inspire and uplift.”
