Springtime in Flint & Genesee

Spring is a great time to explore Flint & Genesee with events and attractions opening as the weather warms up. Centrally located in Michigan at the intersection of I-75, US-23, and I-69, it’s a convenient destination for travelers from the Midwest and even parts of Canada. Flint & Genesee has a delightful mix of small towns and urban living along with plenty of outdoor space to discover. And with many LGBTQ+-owned and friendly businesses in the area, it’s a great place for people in the community to travel.

May kicks off the season for the Flint City Bucks, a USL 2 League soccer team. This championship team is known not only for winning titles, but for the vast support it receives from its fans – locally known as the River Rats, a community-oriented supporter group that participates in LGBTQ+ advocacy, community service, and philanthropy.

Spring also marks the opening of Applewood Estate in the Flint Cultural Center. This historic estate was once the home of Charles Stewart and Ruth Mott, pioneers and philanthropists in the city of Flint. The well-maintained estate offers tours of the historic home along with beautiful gardens featuring an orchard with Mott apples.

Another quintessential summer experience in Flint & Genesee is the US-23 Digital Drive-In Theater, one of the last remaining in Michigan, which opens for the spring and summer season on May 3. The drive-in has three screens playing double features each night at dusk.

Annually on the second weekend of June, the Friends of Modern Art hosts the Flint Art Fair on the grounds of the Flint Institute of Arts in the heart of the Flint Cultural Center. The event includes original works from as many as 175 established and emerging artists from Michigan and beyond.

In June, pride festivals are held in downtown Flint and in Fenton in the southernmost part of the county. This year, Fenton Pride Night will be held June 20 in Rackham Park with many restaurants and stores participating throughout downtown. On June 29, the Flint Pride in the Park will be held in Riverbank Park and Pavilion Park. The event will include exhilarating performances, health screenings, vendors, and a decompression space.
